How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill, also known as medication abortion, actually consists of two pills: Mifepristone and Misoprostol.
The first pill you take is Mifepristone. It stops the body from producing the hormone progesterone, which is what helps the fetus grow and develop. Misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours later, causing the uterus to contract and discharge the fetus. Once the second pill has been taken, the pregnancy should end within 24 hours.
It’s strongly encouraged to follow up with your doctor to ensure you aren’t experiencing any post-abortion complications, and receive treatment, if necessary.
When Can I Get The Abortion Pill in Texas?
As of September 1, 2021, Texas Senate Bill 8 (SB 8) states that “a physician may not knowingly perform or induce an abortion on a pregnant woman if the physician detected a fetal heartbeat”.
In other words, abortion is prohibited by law when a fetal heartbeat is detected by an ultrasound, which can be as early as 6 weeks of pregnancy. The Mayo Clinic states that a medication abortion shouldn’t be attempted after 9 weeks of pregnancy.
Texas law also requires women to receive an ultrasound before an abortion. This confirms how far along you are in your pregnancy (called your gestational age), and determines if you’re at risk of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. In either case, you won’t need an abortion.

How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost?
Abortion pill costs vary, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, and the abortion provider you choose.
What are the Side Effects of the Abortion Pill?
Like any medical procedure, the abortion pill does come with some risks and side effects. The Mayo Clinic states that you may experience:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Cramping
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Is There a Way to Reverse the Effects of the Abortion Pill?
What if you’ve taken the first half of the abortion pill, but changed your mind? You still have options! Read on to learn about abortion pill reversal.
What is Abortion Pill Reversal?
Just as the name suggests, abortion pill reversal is a process that counteracts the abortion pill. Your medical provider prescribes a progesterone pill, which can be taken orally, vaginally, or by intramuscular injection. The goal is to provide the body with extra progesterone and cancel out the effects of Mifepristone.
While the results of your specific reversal attempt can’t be guaranteed, initial studies show a 64-68% success rate, according to the National Library of Medicine.
How Much Does Abortion Pill Reversal Cost?
According to the Abortion Pill Reversal Network, reversal treatment costs depend on the type of progesterone used. Your insurance may cover the treatment, so reach out to your provider for more information!
When Should I Start the Abortion Pill Reversal Process?
As soon as possible. The Abortion Pill Reversal Network states that, ideally, you should start the process within 24 hours of taking Mifepristone. However, there have been successful cases where treatment was started within 72 hours of taking the first half of the abortion pill!
What are the Side Effects of the Abortion Pill Reversal Treatment?
Although progesterone is a natural hormone, you may still experience some side effects from the abortion pill reversal treatment. The Abortion Pill Reversal Network states that you may experience:
- Headaches
- Low energy
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Gastrointestinal discomfort
It’s important to note that some forms of progesterone include peanut oil. If you have a peanut allergy, talk to your provider before starting the reversal process so that they can provide an alternative form of progesterone.
