How to Tell the Guy You’re Not Dating that You’re Pregnant

When most people think of pregnancy announcements, they think of party poppers, balloons, and sentimental surprises. For others, announcing their pregnancy can be one of the most stressful moments imaginable. This is especially true if the father is someone they barely know.

Maybe you thought you would never see each other again. Now you’ve got to make some crucial decisions and break the biggest news of your life.

While there’s no legal requirement to tell the father that you’re pregnant, you may feel that he deserves to know. But, where do you even begin? Take a deep breath and take one step at a time. Today, we’re sharing the steps to tell a one-night stand that you’re pregnant.

Take a Pregnancy Test and Receive an Ultrasound

It’s important to be 100% sure that you’re pregnant before saying anything. Even if you’ve already taken a pregnancy test at home or are experiencing pregnancy symptoms, the only way to know for sure is to take a lab-quality pregnancy test and receive an ultrasound

Ultrasounds have the final say on the state of your pregnancy. They rule out any false results and confirm if you’re likely to carry to term or have a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, which requires immediate medical care.

Understand Your Options

This unexpected pregnancy may have you feeling paralyzed, but the truth is, you do have options: abortion, adoption, and parenting. Don’t allow fear to dictate your choice! Carefully consider each of your options, so you can make an informed and empowered decision!

Learn as much as you can about each option, and think carefully about which one might be best for your future. You can even weigh the pros and cons of each option to process your thoughts. You don’t need to have everything figured out right this second. But, understanding your options and how you feel about them can give you the clarity needed to keep moving forward.

Plan What You Want to Say and Arrange to Meet

While there’s no “right” way to tell someone you barely know that you’re pregnant, it’s always best to have a plan! We recommend that you:

  • Write it down. Writing it down may help you to organize your thoughts and stay on track during the actual conversation.
  • Run it by someone. Ask someone you trust for their feedback. They may be able to provide practical advice and help calm your nerves.
  • Be honest and direct. This is an awkward and difficult conversation. Don’t dance around the point. You could say something like, “I wanted to let you know that I’ve taken a pregnancy test and had an ultrasound. I’m pregnant, I’ve considered my options, and I think I’m going to…”

Once you’ve nailed down what you want to say, arrange to meet in person. Suggest meeting in a public, peaceful place, such as a coffee shop. This lowers the risk of things escalating, and makes it easier for you to remove yourself from the situation, if necessary.

Allow Him to Process His Emotions

You’ve had some time to process your emotions – now he needs to do the same. He may want time alone to think, or want to talk more about the future, which could be a good sign! It shows maturity and a willingness to do his part in a difficult situation!

If he becomes angry, leave the area. He may contact you and apologize after calming down, or not. If he reacts violently, it may be best to cut ties with him for your own safety

What if We Disagree?

An unplanned pregnancy can come as a shock, and the two of you may disagree on the best course of action. Don’t let him (or anyone) force you to make a decision you’re not comfortable with!
