Where Can I Find Help if I’m Considering a Self-Managed Abortion in Texas?

Woman searching for where she can find abortion help

If you find yourself facing an unplanned pregnancy in Texas, you may be wondering what your options are given that Texas seems to be in the center stage in the issue of abortion. Although the legalization of abortion took place nearly fifty years ago, abortions in Texas, even self-managed abortions, are complicated.

Over the last two decades, self-managed abortions, also called at-home abortions, have been on the rise. Mostly since 2000, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of mifepristone. Mifepristone, when combined with misoprostol, is what most people call the “abortion pill” or RU486.  A self-managed abortion is essentially a medical abortion that is done at home.

How does self-managed or at-home abortion work?

Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone that helps your pregnancy grow, in your body. Mifepristone then causes the lining of your uterus to shed—so your pregnancy can no longer continue because the egg will be unable to attach itself to anything. After that, the misoprostol medication will cause uterine contractions, causing you to expel the fetus from your body.

What to know about the Heartbeat bill and self-managed abortions

With the heartbeat bill in place in Texas, it’s hard to know what’s allowed and what’s not allowed. Additionally, it feels like there is change occurring every couple of days regarding the abortion issue. Can you get the abortion in the mail or not? Do you need a TeleMed appointment, or can you get the medicine over the counter? It can be a lot to navigate, especially if you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy which often comes with a host of emotions. But, at Women’s Choice Resource Center, we can help you!
