How Do I Tell My Parents that I’m Pregnant?

Finding out you’re pregnant when you don’t want to be is frightening. Finding a way to tell your parents can feel paralyzing!

We understand how easy it can be to panic at a moment like this. So, take a deep breath and know that you’re not alone! The compassionate team at Women’s Choice Resource Center is here to help you move forward with confidence! Today, we’re sharing some tips on telling your parents that you’re pregnant!

Be Positive that You’re Pregnant

Even if you’ve already taken an over-the-counter pregnancy test, we recommend receiving an ultrasound as well. This will rule out a false positive and determine if you’re at risk for a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy—in which case, you can move forward with getting the necessary medical care.

Women’s Choice Resource Center provides free ultrasounds. Your visit with us is 100% confidential. We will never contact your parents about your results. How and when you choose to tell them is completely up to you!

Consider Your Options

While you don’t have to make a decision right here and now, it’s wise to start thinking about which pregnancy option would be best for your future. You could start by making a pros and cons list for each option or asking a friend for advice.

Need a safe, confidential place to express your options? Consider visiting Women’s Choice Resource Center! Our compassionate client advocates are here to answer all of your questions regarding abortion, adoption, and parenting!

Confide in Someone You Trust

If you’re anxious and unsure of what to say, confide in someone you trust. They may be able to help you process your thoughts and feelings and put them into words. You could even practice the conversation with them to calm your nerves!

Be Straightforward

When it comes time to share the news, try to avoid beating around the bush. This will only increase the tension and make each of you more anxious. You can be as straightforward as: “I have something difficult to tell you. It’s not what I planned, but I’m pregnant.”

Your parents will probably have questions. They may want to know how long you’ve been sexually active, how far along you are, or who the father is. These questions can seem accusatory, but they likely come from a place of concern for you. Remember, they’re hearing shocking news for the first time, so try to answer as calmly as possible.

Give them Time to Process Their Thoughts

Sometimes, the first reaction can be anger or grief. If an argument breaks out, ask to step away and reconvene once everyone’s had a chance to process their thoughts. If anyone said anything hurtful, you can always apologize to each other later and move forward with discussing what pregnancy options you’re considering.

If you’re concerned that either of your parents may react violently to the news,

please speak to a licensed medical professional or trained counselor beforehand. They will be able to help you get to safety if you’re experiencing abuse at home.
